Boxing Champion visits Oasis Academy
Published: Friday, 08 April 2011 10:42

Former Light Middleweight Champion Wayne Alexander with students from Oasis Academy, Coulsdon.

Last Monday, 4th April, former World Light Middleweight Boxing Champion Wayne Alexander paid a surprise visit to Oasis Academy Coulsdon to congratulate students on passing their preliminary boxing awards. Wayne presented the students with certificates and encouraged them to continue learning the fine art of boxing.

Wayne said: "I remember when I was 11 and 12, boxing meant so much to me and learning the disciplines helped me through school."

Qualified ABA Boxing tutors Charlie Beatt and Ricky Andrews have been putting the students through their paces for the past six weeks teaching the Great Britain Amateur Boxing Award scheme. These awards are designed as a fun recreational programme for all participants at all levels, ages and abilities. As well as teaching the sport of boxing they promote fitness, healthy eating and discipline.

The Boxing Award scheme is open to everyone from the age of five years. The Awards are progressive, which means students have to pass each award before going on to the next.

The awards are a newly developed non-contact programme which is now being run across the country in Boxing Clubs, School P.E. lessons and after school clubs, Youth Groups, College and Universities.
