Help for Heroes Fun Day
Published: Friday, 28 September 2012 03:07

The Help for Heroes Fun Day on Sunday 16th September was a great success, raising over £6,000 for the charity.

Julian Speroni kicked off the proceedings by officially starting the Fun Run from outside the Whyteleafe Tavern. The action then continued in the Recreation Ground with stalls, a boxing display, live music by local bands including Steve Boyce with his band ‘Wot’s Cookin’, a licensed bar, classic car display and many other attractions. Ridge Radio was present throughout the afternoon helping to create a lively atmosphere - ex BBC sound engineer Peter Monnery did an excellent job!

As a poignant reminder of the inspiration for the event, there was also a special Help for Heroes stall that commemorated SAS soldier Mick Brown who was killed in action in Iraq.

Local councillors Sally Marks and Tom Dempsey led the organisation of the event and afterwards Tom said: “It was a wonderful day and gave Whyteleafe the chance to show our support for our Armed Forces. There are so many people to thank but I would like to say a special thank you to Mark Crowe of Crowe Scaffolding for his generous support and Palace Goalie Julian Speroni who was great.”

The event was the first organised by the new Whyteleafe Events Committee. The next event being organised by the Committee will be held on Remembrance Sunday in November.
