Interview with Sam Gyimah MP’s parliamentary apprentice

Name: Megan McGeown

Age: 18

From: Oxted, Surrey

Megan McGeown with Sam Gyimah MP

What is your role in the office?

I am on a one year apprenticeship, which I started in January. So far my work has involved researching local and policy issues to brief Sam, helping to draft correspondence with constituents, and putting together content for the website blog.

How are you finding working in Westminster so far?

I am really enjoying it. I have learned a lot about how parliament functions, and it is exciting to be working in such a famous location with an amazing history.

Is it what you expected?

I have been able to get involved in a lot more things in the office than I would have expected, and I have been struck by how varied the work of an MP is. It is also a lot busier than I realised!

Would you ever want to be an MP yourself?

I have only been working here since January, so at the moment there is still a lot to learn! My job has taught me that there are a lot of different roles within politics, it is not simply just MPs.

Where did you hear about this position?

In the local paper.
