'Rector's Ramble' helps to raise funds for new church hall

Photograph by Simon KellyAn 80 mile walk to Canterbury by the rector of St. Mary's Church in Caterham-on-the-Hill has raised over £3,000 towards the refurbishment of St. Mary's old church hall. Reverend Duncan Swan set off on his 'Rector's Ramble' after the Mothering Sunday service on 3rd April arriving at Canterbury Cathedral, tired but triumphant, the following Thursday. After completing the walk Father Duncan said: "It was a good walk. There was one day when I had to walk 24 miles which was very tiring, especially as the weather was hot. I enjoyed the walk, but the best bit was arriving in Canterbury!"

The present hall at St. Mary's was built in the 1960s and was originally intended as a temporary structure with a 25 year life span. Father Duncan said: "The hall is now well beyond its sell-by date, is dilapidated outside and requires modernisation inside. It provides a much-needed community function in Caterham where there is a shortage of such community facilities."
