The controversial sign in the Morrisons car park in Caterham. Shoppers in Caterham can be reassured that they will not be fined £50 if they use the Morrisons car park without shopping in the Morrisons store. New signs put up in the car park last week list a number of rules which, if broken, carry a £50 fine, such as parking in a non-designated area or causing an obstruction. The final rule states that users will be fined £50 if they: 'Use the car park without shopping in the store'.

Commenting on the new sign, Peter Groom of Peter Groom Jewellery in Church Walk said: "Someone must have made a mistake because it is totally unacceptable. It will not just drive people away from other businesses, it will drive people away from Morrisons as well. I am sure Morrisons would not want to upset regular Caterham shoppers."

Church Walk Shopping Centre Manager, Shelley Filippi, said: "I jumped on it the same day the sign went up and wrote to Morrisons informing them of their lease requirements which is that the car park is to be used by all members of the public. I wanted to make sure we nipped it in the bud - we are just waiting for them to change the signage now. The car park attendant is aware that the rule is not to be enforced."

Morrisons conceded that the signs are incorrect and have said they will amend them as soon as possible.
