Goalie nets cash and commitment
Published: Friday, 04 November 2011 09:40

Crystal Palace goalie Julian Speroni swapped the football pitch for a sales pitch on Thursday 27th October, when he took to the tills at the Marie Curie Cancer Care shop in Caterham. Julian, a firm favourite with fans of the club, turned out to raise cash and commitment from customers during his visit, in particular getting local people interested in volunteering just a few hours of their time at the shop each week. He was welcomed to the shop by Tandridge Town Crier, Sonia Hunt

Julian signed photos, shirts, calanders, books and even a little girl's arm which was in a cast. He chatted to customers for over an hour and a half, and was a hit with children and adults alike. Julian said:" I was thrilled to be invited to pop along and support my local Marie Curie shop in Caterham. The stock was amazing and I would urge everyone to sign up and become a volunteer. The shop raises vital funds to support the wonderful work the Marie Curie nurses provide."

Nearly 200 people queued to meet him, and by a quarter to five the shop had to close its doors as it had run out of Julian's team photo. "We were thrilled to have Julian here," said Karen Green, volunteer press officer. "Julian was a huge draw and was very generous with his time and support. He's a fabulous ambassador for the club, and it's great that he was willing to represent the charity like this, and get people talking about our work."

Marie Curie Cancer Care would like to thank Boots in Croydon for donating the photos of Julian. Waitrose in Caterham donated a bottle of wine and The Floral Gallery provided a stunning bouquet which were both presented to Julian.
