Olympic volunteers gear up to welcome world to Surrey
Published: Friday, 22 June 2012 11:44

Training sessions are underway for more than 450 volunteers who will welcome the world to Surrey during the 2012 Games.

Recruited by Surrey County Council, the ambassadors will be at key locations along the route and at train stations on the days the Olympic cycling events and torch relay take place in the county.

They will give directions, provide information about the Olympic events, direct spectators and encourage people to visit local businesses and attractions.

The volunteers are being briefed on their roles and are learning about all things Olympics.

More than 700 people from across the county applied to help out.

One of the volunteers is Sue Dale, a 60-year-old from Cranleigh, who said: "Volunteered because I love the Olympics. I'm thrilled to be involved and wouldn't miss it for the world."

Helyn Clack, Surrey County Council's Cabinet Member for Community Services and the 2012 Games, said: "Olympic events on our doorstep is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and our ambassadors will play a key role in helping spectators make the most of the events. It's also a great way to promote local businesses and attractions."
