Unhappy residents are campaigning to stop motorists from breaking the 30mph speed limit on Stanstead Road, Caterham-on-the-Hill.

A recent review by Surrey Police into traffic speeds along the road captured 51.9% of cars driving in excess of the speed limit, and 11.25% travelling at over 40mph per hour. On average, 70% of the cars travelling down Stanstead Road are driving over the speed limit of 30mph.

Resident Amanda Davies has started a petition to try and stop cars from breaking the speed limit and drive safely.

Amanda said: "Speeding has got out of control along Stanstead Road. I have spoken to many residents along the road and elderly people in particular are too scared to even walk along the pavement. On Wednesday 8th August, just under two thousand vehicles were driving over 30mph; with one car even driving at 61-60mph. Something needs to be done before a serious accident happens and someone is killed. It only takes one car to kill a person and with just under than two thousand motorists travelling over the speed limit what chance do the pedestrians have?"

The petition will be considered by the Tandridge Local Committee at a meeting on 5th October 2012. The meeting will be held at 10.15am in the Centenary Hall, Wheelers Lane, Smallfield and is open for the public to attend.
