Phil and friends complete one thousand mile cycle challenge
Published: Thursday, 29 November 2012 02:36

Well done to ex-firefighter Phil Charrington from Caterham who undertook the challenge to cycle from Lands End to John O'Groats with his friends Johnny Banks from Southborough and Andy Duncan from Greenwich. The trio set off on Wednesday 19th September and completed the 1,017 mile route in 19 days.

Afterwards Phil said: "The ride was very wet and very cold. We went through floods in the Midlands, two of them at least two feet deep, which meant we were pouring water out of our shoes! It was very cold around Glencoe – I couldn't change gear my fingers were so cold! The ride was on my 'bucket list' of things to do and although we did not do the ride for charity we have been given some donations for the fire brigade charity."

Phil said that their average mileage was 53.5 miles a day with a diversion on the way to visit Culloden Battlefield.
