Caterham's 120-year old Horticultural Society is holding its Spring show on Saturday 27th April. It takes place at Hillcroft School, Chaldon Road, Caterham. The show will open to the public from 2pm, with the presentation of the cups and medals at 4.30pm. The entrance fee is a recession-busting 40 pence. The show is timed perfectly because unseasonable weather means daffodils and tulips are blooming later than usual this year. Society Chairman Debbie Fox is anticipating a big bunch of entries. Debbie said: "We have some exciting additional categories in our horticultural shows this year. I invite every local gardener, flower arranger and home-baker to enter something into the show. We value all the entries. I'd like to see more entries from children and young people. I found my first show in 2012 highly enjoyable." Highlights in the 42 show categories look set to include vases of spring flowers. Floral arrangements will have themes such as 'Spring time' and a 'Celebration of St. George'. Judges will also sample cakes and marmalade made by hopeful entrants. Caterham Valley Parish Council is sponsoring an exciting new category to the show. One lucky school class or youth organisation (ages 6-16 years) will win £25 for their display of flowers or handicrafts. This must be their own work. There are also second and third prizes. A parish council representative will present the prize at 4.30pm on the day. To guarantee their table, groups must inform the show secretary of their intention to enter by 8pm on Saturday 13th April. This year the Society is also looking for the best young local gardener aged 16-21 years old. It has introduced the Roy Skelton Cup. The cup marks the contribution of the Society's much loved previous chairman of the same name. To win it, the young competitor has to score the highest total points in horticultural classes in the 2013 Spring, Summer and Autumn shows.
