Sam Gyimah wins East Surrey

East Surrey Conservatives were celebrating a decisive win this morning with the election of Sam Gyimah, who replaces Peter Ainsworth as MP.  The Conservative majority was 16,874,  nearly 1,000 higher than in the 2005 election.  There was a higher turnout as well this time around, with 71.28% of the population of East Surrey voting as opposed to 66.6% last time.

The results for all six candidates were as follows:

Martin Hogbin Monster Raving Loony William Hill Party 422
David Lee Liberal Democrat 14,133
Sandy Pratt Independent 383
Matt Rodda Labour 4,925
Helena Windsor UK Independence Party 3,770
