74 kids and adults to part in the Skaterham Sponsored Bike Ride at Kenley Aerodrome last Sunday, 4th July to raise funds for a new toilet block at the skate park based in the old Guards Chapel in Guards Avenue, Caterham. The idea came from nine year-old Alex Edge, a youngster who suffers from Asperser’s Disorder, which is a milder variant of Autistic Disorder. Alex from Alexander Crescent in Caterham wanted to raise the £30,000 needed for the new toilet block himself after hearing members of staff discussing the need to raise the money.

With other members of Skaterham and the help of his Mum Maria and Dad Simon the sponsored event was organised in just three weeks. Local businesses gave support by donating raffle prizes, Michael Lord the butcher provided a barbeque and Hi Bounce attended with a bouncy slide to make a fun-filled afternoon. The entrants had to complete a two-mile circuit of the airfield on anything with wheels that was not motorised which included bicycles, scooters, roller blades, and pushchairs. One Mum skated around on roller blades while pushing her baby in a pushchair! After the event Alex, who raised over £470 in sponsorship, was awarded a Skaterham red staff shirt which are given to commendable young people who have given that little extra.
