No summer bonfires please
Published: Wednesday, 02 July 2014 19:28

Bonfires may be one way of getting rid of garden waste, but they can create smoke, cause air pollution and prevent people from opening windows, hanging out washing and or even just sitting in their gardens. One inconsiderate resident’s bonfire in the wrong weather conditions can create clouds of smoke over neighbouring houses causing a nuisance, ill-feeling and anger.

It is an offence to cause a statutory smoke nuisance and the Council’s policy is to take formal action against people who regularly have bonfires which cause a statutory nuisance to their neighbours.

Where possible, residents should try and compost their waste, use the Green Waste Club or take it to a recycling site. Burning garden waste produces smoke, especially if it is damp or green.

The Green Waste Club is a garden waste collection service run by Biffa. To find out more call 0800 0858 286 or visit www.greenwasteclub.co.uk

Home compost bins are available from £15 through the Composting Surrey website, which also has information, advice and hints. Visit www.compostingsurrey.com or call 0844 571 4444.

Tony Elias, Chairman of the Community Services Committee, said: “We appreciate residents want to get rid of their garden waste and may be tempted to have a bonfire. We are urging them not to burn their garden waste, but to compost it, join the Green Waste Club, or take it to the local recycling centre. If you believe there is no alternative to a bonfire, please give careful thought to its timing and the effect on your neighbours."
