New Community Garden launched in Caterham
Published: Thursday, 24 July 2014 16:19

Monday 21st July saw the launch meeting of ‘Vitamin G’, a new project to create a community art garden near Queen’s Park Pavilion in Caterham-on-the-Hill. The project is an opportunity for residents of the area to come together to create something beautiful and inspirational in this new community space. The project leaders consisted of Tandridge Trust representative Lisa Phillips, sculptor and local community artist Ruth Wheeler and garden designer Anita Smith who all met with Caterham residents to talk through possible ideas for the garden.

Lisa spoke about potential workshops that could be run as part of the project, for example wood carving and mosaic making. Ruth stated that not only would this prove an enjoyable activity but would also give residents the opportunity to create unique and inspirational art pieces for the garden. The project leaders are open to ideas and stressed that it was an opportunity for all generations of the community to come together to have their own input in the design and its development.

The meeting attracted various people from the Caterham community for example, representatives from the Horticultural Society, Caterham Croquet Club and the Richmond Fellowship, a specialist mental health services provider. Caterham Croquet Club showed a particularly keen interest as their clubhouse currently resides in the garden itself.

Teachers from de Stafford School were also present and interested in ways in which the garden could be used not only recreationally but educationally.

To be a part of this ongoing project no experience is required only enthusiasm, although keen gardeners who could share their knowledge would be a great asset.
