A recent survey regarding the future of Caterham's Soper Hall in Harestone Valley Road has shown a general consensus that the building should be restored and maintained as a community facility for future generations.  The Soper Hall Group, part of the Caterham Community Partnership, distributed the survey in the July edition of The Caterham and District Independent.  Over two hundred local people completed the survey, three quarters of them from Caterham Valley.
A large number of the respondents indicated they would like to see improvements made to the hall, in particular the addition of facilities such as a kitchen, toilets and disabled access. Throughout the findings there is overwhelming support for the Soper Hall to continue as a historic venue for community activities and involvement. Suggestions for the hall’s future were varied, with some believing it would be the ideal venue for a local cinema and others imagining it as a perfect place to hold meetings and small exhibitions.
The Soper Hall, which used to be the council offices of the old Caterham and Warlingham Urban District Council has come under a fresh threat following talks of selling the land to a private developer. This is the third time that its future has been in doubt and local residents  can show their support and comment on the survey at www.soperhall.org.uk. In particular, the Soper Hall Group is keen to hear from any local businesses or organisations that may be interested in hiring or using the hall on a regular basis.  For more information call Graham Tapley on 07768 294200.
